PEDIATRIC EYE EXAMS
Kids are welcome to have eye exams at VISION+EYES! We encourage all kids to have their first eye exam around 4 years old to screen for vision problems that might make it difficult for them to learn in school. Many kids have their vision tested at the pediatrician but a visual acuity chart is not an accurate way to assess a child's vision. Oftentimes, kids with farsightedness or astigmatism can read the letters on a chart but will struggle with lots of eyestrain. So come to VISION+EYES to have your child's vision thoroughly tested to make sure they can see clearly.
What are signs to look for?
Many parents are not aware that their child may struggle with their vision. A child may not tell their parent that their vision is blurry because to the child, their vision appears normal and they do not know it is blurry. A pediatrician or teacher may be able to identify when a child needs help with their vision from experience, but here are a few things to look for in your child that may tell you if they need an eye exam:
-
Any eye turns or misaligned eyes
-
Frequent squinting
-
Moving closer to objects
-
Rubbing eyes
-
Poor eye movement or tracking
If your child displays any of these signs, schedule an eye exam with Dr. T to have their vision tested.
Rubbing eyes can be a sign of eye strain

Pediatric testing
You may wonder how we test a child's vision because they may not be able to do the same tests as you. Dr. T tests for the same measurements like visual acuity, eye alignment, prescription strength, and eye health, but there are different ways to do it for younger children. Our electronic chart can change to pictures or letters that may be easier for children to correctly identify. Measuring the reflection of light from your child's eye can indicate how their eyes focus and if there's any misalignment.
Dr. T discusses the best plan for your child's vision and the best ways to keep their eyes healthy. Pediatric eye exams are important for your child to make sure their vision develops properly. A child's performance in school has a strong correlation to their ability to see, so schedule your child's eye exam with Dr. T to make sure their vision is good and eyes are healthy.
